It’s Great to be the King

Felix Hernandez pitches a shutout against the Yankees as the Mariners launch four home runs in a 7-0 bombing of the Bronx. That gives him three on the season and two in his last three starts. That doesn’t quite capture how well he’s pitched of late. He went nine innings in his last start, but the game went into extra inning. Over his last four starts he’s pitched 35 2/3 innings. Over his last seven starts, he pitched 57 2/3 innings, over eight innings per start.

Felix allowed just two hits tonight, walking three and striking out eleven. The win gives the Mariners nine victories in their last 12 games. I still think the AL West is the type of division in which a team can come back from a 14 game deficit in three months. Beating the Yankees has to give them some confidence. I still don’t think trading Cliff Lee is a sure thing.

Maybe I was wrong about the Mariners. They certainly did not have any trouble hitting Yankees pitching. But even bad teams have hot streaks. just they don’t last so long and tend to max out at playing 600 ball (good teams can go on a 800 ball streak for a couple of weeks).

Should have a better idea at the ASB.
