The Flesh is Willingham

The Oakland Athletics obtained another outfielder:

The A’s, continuing their quest to upgrade their offense, have acquired outfielder Josh Willingham from the Nationals.

Willingham, 31, is Oakland’s third major offensive addition of the offseason. The team acquired outfielder David DeJesus from the Kansas City Royals in November and recently signed free-agent DH Hideki Matsui.

“I think this team is ready to win,” said Willingham, who expected to be dealt during the recent winter meetings. “And the organization, with the moves it has already made this offseason, proves it is ready to win also.”

Like Matsui and DeJesus, Willingham does an excellent job of getting on-base. For the first time in a while, Billy Beane is putting together a team with a number of players with above average OBPs. Are teams suddenly paying less for this skill?

The Nationals get high strikeout, high walk pitcher Henry Rodriguez and outfielder Corey Brown. Brown is an old minor leaguer, 25 in 2011. He’s done a good job getting on base in the minors and steals very well, 48 swipes in 56 attempts. The Nats might see him as a potential leadoff man.
