Retaining Ricky

The Marlins worked out a long-term contract with Ricky Nolasco:

Marlins right-hander Ricky Nolasco has agreed to a $26.5 million, three-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations said Monday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract won’t become final until Nolasco passes a physical.

Nolasco gets $6 million next season, $9 million in 2012 and $11.5 million in 2013.

That buys out Ricky’s last two years of arbitration and his first year of free agency. Nolasco’s FIP certainly deserves that money, although the last two seasons his ERA was way over that predicted value. He does allow a high percentage of fly balls, which leads to a high home run rate. Still, with his high strikeout and low walk rate, the Marlins can live with the homers.
