Beltre and the Rangers

Rumors were reported and denied Sunday about Adrian Beltre signing with the Texas Rangers. Baseball Time in Arlington analyzes what the contract would mean if Texas does sign him, and what other moves might be triggered by the transaction:

One of the topics of discussion that has run concurrent with Adrian Beltre is the question of what happens to Michael Young, but I’m not sure there is much question at this point — with Beltre in the fold, Young assuredly logs the vast majority of his playing time at first base and designated hitter, with Mitch Moreland assuming a lesser role than what most had envisioned after his successful rookie campaign (though I would caution that this is not necessarily a bad thing), and the likes of Josh Hamilton, David Murphy and others filling out the remainder of the plate appearances at DH. I can also see the possibility of Young receiving marginal playing time at second base and shortstop in a “supersub” role, but he is simply not a viable defender at those positions at this point in his career, and I’m not sure that a ballclub which has placed such a strong emphasis on up-the-middle defense will assent to a plan where Young makes 20-25 starts at premium defensive positions.

It will also be the second time in three years that Young is moved off a premium defensive position to make way for a better glove man. He wasn’t that happy with the first move, we’ll see how he reacts if this happens.
