Stopgap Season

The Royals agreed to a one-year deal with Jeff Francis, although the terms are not known yet. A shoulder injury curtailed his career for the last three seasons. In his 104 1/3 innings in 2010, after returning from surgery, he posted 2.0 BB per 9, and excellent rate. That’s been his strength throughout his career. He gives up hits, but his low walk rate keeps his OBP allowed reasonable.

Don’t expect a big boost due to leaving Coors Field. As you can see at the above link, he was only slightly better on the road than at home during his time with the Rockies.

For the Royals, this is another stop-gap until the minor league talent is ready for the majors. Francis is another arm they can trot out every five games. He won’t be great, but he won’t be terrible, either. If the defense is good, he’ll do fine.
