Name Change in the Works

Jim Crane is contemplating changing the name of the Houston franchise:

Crane says the team will conduct a study to decide whether or not to change the name. He says switching uniforms is something they are “highly considering.”

Any changes wouldn’t happen until 2013 when Houston makes the move from the National League to the American League.

I suppose with the end of NASA’s manned space program, the Astros are no longer a name that will resonate with new fans. What to call the team? Revive the Oilers? Bring back the Colt ’45s? How about the Lone Stars? With Stars in the name, it will harken back to the Astros.

Being purely selfish, I’d hate to see the name go away since they’re the only team the White Sox have faced in the World Series in my lifetime.

Sad to see that the first thing a new owner wants to do is change the team’s name AND move it to the AL…So now there is no NL baseball in Texas…Thanks Bud…Why not move Mil back to the AL where they came from?

I agree with Luis that the team that should have moved (back) to the American League should have been the Brewers. At least they didn’t monkey with one of the original sixteen teams.

As for the name, it reflects a period in Houston’s history that is ending (its curious how the U.S. manned space program ended with a whimper). This will be the case soon with the name “Oilers” as well. These are football names, but there are not many cowboys anymore in Dallas and they no longer make steel in Pittsburg. But I don’t think “Lone Stars” is a bad name.
