Catching On

The Royals signed their young catcher Salavdor Perez to a long-term deal:

The Kansas City Royals on Monday extended catcher Salvador Perez through at least 2016, with club options that could keep him with the club through 2019.

He’ll play this season as a 22 year old. I’m sure why they signed him to such a long term deal, especially since his cup of coffee in the majors seems out of line with his minor league numbers. In general, however, these kind of signings are great for the club, as they avoid arbitration and keep the player in the fold through his prime years. If he turns out to be a great hitting catcher (he did hold his own in the high minors at a young age), this will pay great dividends down the road.
