Old School First Round

In order to make the new playoff format fit into the established playoff schedule, MLB is going back to a 2-3 format for the League Division Series (this year only).

MLB said that with schedules already drawn for this season, the post-season had to be compressed to fit in the extra games. Hence, fewer off-days for travel.

“I don’t think it really changes the way you look at this season. You really have to fight to win your division,” New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “It is kind of strange to start on the road. That doesn’t quite seem right, but it’s a one-year thing. I understand why they’re doing it.”

The LCS was played this way for many years, but rotated between the two divisions rather than being based on record. When clubs started earning home field advantage, they no longer liked the format.

That’s because it’s not an advantage. You risk playing your first game at home down 2-0.

I’d mind 2-2-1 less if TV scheduling didn’t end up putting in extra off days as well–it totally distorts the pitching situation and leads to the abomination of November baseball.
