The Nats Enquirer notes that Steve Lombardozzi, Jr. keeps hitting.
And then there’s Steve Lombardozzi: three more hits yesterday in the Nats split squad win against the Tigers, starting at 2B on this day. Lombo has 19 hits on the spring, hitting a healthy .328, but whatever you do, don’t think Davey is trying to make him a utility guy.
Johnson, instead, wants Lombardozzi to be able to fill in if he’s needed. I wonder, however, if the organization is starting to think of moving Danny Espinosa to shortstop, where he spent his minor league career, and installing Lombardozzi at second. Ian Desmond in two full seasons showed no ability to get on base. I’m not sure how the Espinosa/Lombardozzi keystone would work defensively, but they might make up for any problems on the offensive side. More likely, Desmond get hurt at some point in the season, the Nationals call up Steve, and Ian never gets his job back.
