The Orioles and Red Sox stand tied at six in the bottom of the sixteenth inning. Chris Davis, who started the game as a designated hitter, comes in to pitch for Baltimore. He hit like a pitcher today as he went 0 for 7. Davis strikes out Jarrod Saltalamacchia to start the inning. So far, he’s having a better day as a pitcher.
Just past the six hour mark of the game, Peter Gammons (who is filling in for Jerry Remy), asked if the hour had been reached yet. Told it had, Peter said, “I thought there would be some kind of ceremony.” 🙂
With two out, Marlon Byrd reaches on an error, then Mike Aviles hits a ball in the gap, and Byrd tries to score, but is thrown out at the plate. Not a bad inning by Davis.
Darnell McDonald comes into pitch the top of the 17th.
Update: Wilson Betemit walks to start the 17th, but tries to steal and is thrown out by a mile. J.J. Hardy then picks up his fifth hit of the game, a double. The CS looms large.
Update: After another walk, Adam Jones hits a three-run homer into the Monster seats. McDonald is no Chris Davis.
Update: The first two Red Sox batters reach in the bottom of the seventeenth, but Adrian Gonzalez strikes out, and Darnell McDonald hits into a double play, failing to help his own cause. Chris Davis pitches two strong innings (for a position player) to get the win. Davis gives up two hits and a walk, but strikes out two and does not allow a run for his first major league win.
Adrian Gonzales, who looked this weekend like he might be coming out of his awful slump, was 0-for-8 today.
Poor McDonald. Though I’m sure no one will blame him.
Man, this game had everything. Will Middlebrooks’ grand slam, some terrific defensive plays, some really terrible defensive plays, plenty of fireworks but a long stretch of scoreless baseball. Great game. (Not so great if you’re a Sox fan, I know.)
Gammons asked whether the 500 pitch had been made yet, and Orsillo replied that it was the 501st!
