The Cardinals completed a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks in which the St. Louis offense dominated. They hit an amazing .318/.438/.818 with runners in scoring position. That last number, the slugging percentage, is what’s making this a great offense. The Cardinals are slugging .467 as a team, best in the National League and second in the majors.
Can that power continue? A look at which players are doing the slugging casts doubt. Allen Craig is a late bloomer, but he’s in his prime and put up good power numbers in 2011.
Carlos Beltran is a legitimate power hitter, but he is old and injury prone.
David Freese is another late bloomer, late in his prime. He never came close to slugging .500 in a season before.
Yadier Molina is a veteran with a career .381 slugging percentage. He did show a surge in power last season, and is in the last year of his prime. Still, I would think he’d finish closer to his career mark than .500.
Rafael Furcal is a career .410 slugger. He’s way past his prime, and the only time he slugged .500 was when he got off to a hot start then missed the rest of the season due to injury.
Jon Jay is young, but his minor league power was unimpressive.
One could argue that as some of these players fall off, Lance Berkman and Matt Holliday could fill in the gaps. We’ll see. On the other hand, they might get Chris Carpenter back, and Adam Wainwright could improve, and then they won’t need to score a lot of runs to win.
