There may be a beanball war brewing between the Tigers and the Rays:
The Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays were warned by home plate umpire Vic Carapazza after Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello hit Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist with a pitch in the first inning of Sunday’s game.
The incident came one day after Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera yelled at the Tampa Bay dugout after he struck out in the 10th inning against Rays closer Fernando Rodney. The Tampa Bay right-hander threw an in-tight-and-up pitch to back Cabrera off the plate during the at-bat.
I’m sorry, but when someone is as successful at the plate as Cabrera, pitchers are going to come inside. He wasn’t hit, so what’s the problem? Miguel hit a home run his second time at the plate, which to me seems like much better revenge. Jim Leyland should know better, especially as the Rays/Red Sox history shows that Joe Maddon teams have no problem hitting batters.
