Ivan Nova pitched a brilliant game against the Orioles, striking out 11 and walking one in his first nine-inning start. He made one mistake, a two-run homer to Matt Wieters, and that looked like it would cost him, as the Yankees trailed 2-1 in the final frame. New York loaded the bases with one out, bringing up Travis Hafner and Vernon Wells. In the fifth inning, in the same situation, the two declining veterans failed to deliver a run. This time, Hafner drew a walk and Wells singled, and the Yankees won 3-2. The Yankees can take over second place in the NL AL East with a win over Baltimore Saturday.
Update: Nova pitched efficiently, throwing just 102 pitches. That makes his 11 K even more impressive.
Nova looked good but Johnson gave that game away.
Surprising the Yankees have W as many as they have. Girardi should get MOY if they continue.
If Arod and Jeter can come back and perform effectively, they may grab a WC spot.
“The Yankees can take over second place in the NL East with a win over Baltimore Saturday.”
Wrong division.
I agree with pft. I’m out of the country, so I don’t see many Yankees games, but when I read about them, half the time these players are completely new to me as Yankees. Its like I reading about some team in a mid-sized Midwestern city struggling to get to .500. But they’ve been hanging in there.
