The Braves extended their lead in the NL East Monday night, but it took them 14 innings as they beat Miami 7-1. The game was a pitching duel for the first thirteen innings, Miami scoring in the bottom of the fifth, Atlanta in the top of the sixth. Before the 14th innings debacle, Miami relievers pitched seven perfect innings in a row, only to see Chris Hatcher get hammered for the loss. With former Nationals pitcher John Lannan throwing eight shutout innings in Philadelphia, Washington loses 3-2, and the Braves are five games up in the NL East. (Former Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth nearly tied it in the ninth, as his blast to center came down short for a sacrifice fly.)
Matt Havery brought out the best in Tim Lincecum Monday night as both pitched seven innings, giving up six hits and a walk, leading to each allowing three runs. Tim outshone Matt, however, as The Freak struck out 11 to the nude model’s six. It didn’t matter, however, as the Mets bullpen pitched a complete game shutout, going nine scoreless inning as New York takes the game 4-3 in sixteen innings. Eric Young singled in the 16th, got to third on a steal and an out, then scored on an error. The Giants remain 6 1/2 games out in the NL West. Five of the Mets eight games in July were decided by one run, the Mets going 3-2 in those games.
