Workman, Yo!

Brandon Workman finishes five innings against the Oakland Athletics with a no-hitter intact. He walked one and struck out five so far. This is his first major league start after making one relief appearance. His minor league profile was a pitcher with a high strikeout rate and a low walk rate, so he continued that today. He also allowed many fewer hits than innings pitched, and he’s really backing that up today. The Red Sox have not scored against Bartolo Colon yet, so Workman may need the low hitter to win this game.

Update: The A’s go down 1-2-3 in the sixth, Dustin Pedroia making a nice play up the middle to end the inning. Workman has thrown 88 pitches, so we’ll see how long the Red Sox allow him to pitch.

Update: Coco Crisp grounds a ball up the middle leading off the seventh inning. Dustin Pedroia dives for the ball, fields it and makes a throw, but it’s too late. Crisp breaks up the no-hitter on the infield single. The Red Sox lead 2-0.

Update: The game goes to extra innings tied at two. Josh Donaldson singles home the winning run in the 11th for a 3-2 Oakland victory. The Red Sox go into the All-Star break with a 2 1/2 game lead over the Rays, the A’s go into the break with a two-game lead over Texas.

Red Sox were in 1st place at the break in 2008, 2009, 2011 as well. The 2nd half has proven to be their downfall in recent years.

They made it to the ALCS in 2008, and the playoffs in 2009. But 2011, well, we don’t talk about that year…
