Visualizing the Greats

Here is an interesting data visualization contest involving baseball.

Graphicacy would like to challenge you to visualize the careers of the top 20 baseball players (10 hitters, 10 pitchers) of all-time as high-density small-multiple graphics (like extended spark-lines), or some other graphic form that presents a summary of individual performance data in a simple, highly condensed, easy to compare way. Click “Request Details” to receive entry guidelines and award criteria.

I’m sure there are clever and creative Baseball Musings readers who could give this a go.

Ticket Contest

I’m sure Baseball Musings readers would be interested in help buying tickets. Since it’s the holiday season, the site partnered up with Rukkus, a sports ticket search engine, to get you tickets to any baseball game of your choice for free. Click on the image below for details.

Rukkus contest

Teams have certainly shaken things up this off-season. I hope you win and get a chance to see the new players coming to your town!

Tacos for All!

Angel Pagan walks and steals second in the bottom of the eighth, and every one wins a free taco! Taco Bell will give them out on Oct. 30th. I’ll probably be hunkered down in a hurricane then.

With one out, the Tigers walk Pablo Sandoval intentionally, and the Pirates make a pitching change with Buster Posey coming up.

Update: Octavio Dotel is in the game on a double switch.

Update: For the second time tonight, a Tigers reliever walks the first man he faces. The bases are loaded for Hunter Pence.

Update: Pence hits a fly ball deep enough to right, and Angel Pagan score with Sandoval moving up to third. The Giants get an insurance run as they lead 2-0. Time for another pitching change.

Update: Belt stirkes out to end the inning. The Giants take a 2-0 lead into the ninth.

Eastbound & Down Day 2 Winner

On Tuesday, you were asked to name the player who would collect the most total bases in that night’s games to win the second season of Eastbound & Down on DVD. Two players tied with nine total bases on Aug 2nd.

Mark Teixeira NYA 9
Omar Infante FLA 9
Alfonso Soriano CHN 8
Garrett Jones PIT 8
Ryan Howard PHI 8
Tyler Colvin CHN 7
Mark Reynolds BAL 7
Brennan Boesch DET 6

Mark Teixeira also set a record, homering from both sides of the plate for the 12th time in his career. He tied Omar Infante with nine total base. Mark did it in a rain shortened, six inning game, so another hit might have given him the win outright.

No one picked Teixeira or Infante, so the winner will be the first comment with nine total bases. The winner is Chris D, who selected Andrew McCutchen with nine total bases. Congratulations to Chris!

Eastbound and Down Contest

HBO releases the second season of Eastbound & Down on Tuesday, and you can win a copy. From the press release:

Kenny Powers, the washed up former Major League pitcher, is back with more of his self-destructive behavior and penchant for profanity in Eastbound & Down: The Complete Second Season. Outrageous and irreverent, Powers (played to perfection by Danny McBride) finds himself heading south of the border after a humiliating letdown that would have put him back in baseball changes his game plan. Eastbound & Down: The Complete Second Season debuts on DVD ($29.98), Blu-ray Disc ($39.98) and via digital download on August 2, 2011, day and date with the release of Eastbound & Down: The Complete First Season Blu-ray Disc ($39.98) and via digital download.

When we last saw Powers, he thought he’d scored a shot at a comeback in the majors, but soon discovered the offer was bogus. Now, having left his North Carolina life behind, he’s making a fresh start in a small Mexican town, where he can both nurse his wounds and bless the locals with his awesomeness. This season, McBride is joined by a great cast including Steve Little as Stevie Janowski, the high school band teacher who idolizes Powers; Michael Peña as Sebastian Cisneros, owner of the local Mexican baseball team; Marco Rodriguez as Roger Hernandez, manager of the baseball team; Ana de la Reguera as sultry lounge singer Vida; Efren Ramirez and Elizabeth De Razzo as his new neighbors Catuey and Maria; and Deep Roy and Joaquin Cosio as Powers’s new sidekicks, Aaron and Hector.

Starting today, Baseball Musings will run a contest for five days to give away a DVD set each day. I’ll post today’s contest at noon so the west coast has a chance to wake up and participate.

Win a Strat-O-Matic Game!

Strat-O-Matic Baseball

As Strat-O-Matic approaches the 50th anniversary of the game, Baseball Musings is offering free games to lucky contestants. From the company:

Since 1961, Strat-O-Matic has created the most realistic simulation of statistically accurate baseball. Every player is rated by Strat-O-Matic’s unique rating system with statistical precision in each phase of the game – batting, pitching, defense and running.

Strat-O-Matic Baseball is played with the exact same rules as professional baseball. Each major leaguer has his own Strat-O-Matic Player Card based on his overall stats from the 2009 season. The gamer controls every aspect of each play from determining the starting line-up, stealing, hitting and running to replacing the starting pitcher. Instead of a bat and ball, the gamer uses dice, player cards and charts to play the game.

I’ve played for 30 years, since my junior year of college. We drafted leagues, stayed up late at night playing series, and often watched other games with great interest. Along the way we witnessed great plays, unlikely MVPs, clutch home runs, all with a roll of the dice. The game evolved from a very simple one set of stats for the batter, one for the pitcher, to taking account of left and right matchups, park effects, clutch hitting, and better defensive simulations. I play by mail now, but I always look forward to the results arriving in my inbox.

There will be four contests over the next week. The winner of the first contest gets a choice of the classic board game or the latest version of the computer game. This game will be random. Leave a comment with your name and a valid email address. For each comment I will then run the Evil Player program, which simply chooses a random player from those who have seen action in the current season. If I run it for you and it comes up with Joe Mather, you win. I will reply to each comment with the name of the player selected for you.

Why Joe Mather? In college I lived on the 13th floor of Mather House, and my first Strat-O-Matic League was called The 13th Floor Strat-O-Matic League.

As of today, there are 858 players. If you enter and lose, you may enter again by leaving another comment. I will run the comments in order, but I won’t be in front of the computer all day, so you may need to wait to find out if you won. Members of The 13th Floor Strat-O-Matic League, The SOMBILLA, and the PWBL are not eligible.

Update, 4:34 EDT 5/5/2010: This contest has no winner after 24 hours, so I’m modifying the rules. If Joe Mather comes up as the Evil Player, or he is in the top 20 on the list, you’ll win the prize.

Update, 4:48 EDT 5/5/2010: We have a winner! Hans takes home the prize. Thanks to everyone who played!
