Cleating Pays

It appears steroid use is no longer a detriment to promoting products. Fernando Tatis Jr.seems to be doing just fine:

In conjunction with his branding company Xample, Tatis plans to unveil 50 pairs of custom cleats this season. His choice for Monday night, featuring different designs on each cleat, honored Gwynn, known as Mr. Padre, who played his entire 20-season career in San Diego. Gwynn died in 2014 at age 54.

ESPN.com

I suspect part of this comes from a new generation of sports writers who grew up with steroid use and are more complacent about it than the people writing in the 1990s.

They are Birds

A Toronto fans used AI to generate a Blue Jays ad. It is spectacular:

I believe the AI took the term Blue Jays literally, so people regurgitating food into other people’s mouths! Just for good measure, we get a Michael Bay ending.

Seriously, the Blue Jays should adopt the logo.

Fantasy All-Star Viewing

Lonnie Hanover of Rick’s Cabaret New York is a long time supporter of Baseball Musings. He wants readers in the New York City area to know the club will be holding an All Star Game viewing party in honor of Aaron Judge receiving the most All Star votes. I’m told the dancers are big sports fans. The club is located at 50 West 33rd St.

The Price of Advertising

Advertisers appear to be getting upset about sky-rocketing prices for sports commercials.

As one of the last bastions of DVR-proof TV, the price of sports — from the prices paid by marketers for sponsorships and 30-second ads to TV rights paid by media companies — continues to climb. But it’s rare for marketers to publicly declare they’re reaching the end of their rope. And to threaten to move their ad dollars away from sports media and into cheaper social and digital marketing.

We’ll see. I suspect it will be tough for someone to take that first step.

Bud and Bud

Anheuser-Busch extended their deal with Major League Baseball through 2018:

With the partnership, America’s largest brewer will sponsor MLB Opening Week, the Player of the Month Awards, the league’s Fan Cave and will be the presenting sponsor of the new one-game faceoff between two wild-card teams to further advance into the playoffs.

The deal comes on the heels of a two-year deal that was struck as part of a settlement from a lawsuit in 2010. Anheuser-Busch claimed Major League Baseball was renegging on terms of a new deal, while MLB claimed it was not informed in negotiations that the brewer had recently signed a six-year deal to be the official beer sponsor of the NFL, a contract which is reportedly worth $1.2 billion.

The story does not indicate how much the beer maker pays MLB, but this is just another example of money flowing into the sport due to the ability of the game to attract live viewers in an age of downloaded content. It’s going to be a very good winter for free agents.

The article does raise a trend that makes me wonder if the beer maker can survive:

According to a recent Gallup Poll, only 39 percent of American drinkers aged 18 to 34 said they preferred beer in 2011. That’s down from 53 percent in 2001. Wine jumped from 16 percent to 29 percent in the age group. Last year, also marked the first time in a decade that Anheuser-Busch shipped less than 100 million barrels worldwide, according to Beer Marketers Insights, a trade publication.

While the beer industry as a whole is up about one percent in the first half of the year, craft beer is up 12 percent in volume and 14 percent in revenue, according to the trade group The Brewers Association. This year figures to be the third straight double-digit increase for those smaller brewers.

I prefer single malt Scotch myself, or a good bourbon.

DraftStreet Winner

It was a good night for anyone who played the Matthew Berry Challenge at DraftStreet. Mr. Berry finished 62, so 61 contestants received back their entry fee. Congratulations to Kiddie34 who finished first and took home the $145 first prize. My team did well for a change, finishing second. My last second changes to Manny Machado and Mark Rogers paid off. Hope you’ll play again in a couple of weeks. There are two more DraftStreet contests left.

DraftStreet Special Offer

DraftStrett Champ

HixvilleHunk

This Kid Turned $60 Into $60,000 Playing Daily Fantasy Baseball

As you may have noticed, Baseball Musings has been running promotions every few weeks for DraftStreet.com. DraftStreet offers Daily and Weekly fantasy sports leagues for Baseball, Football, Basketball, Hockey and Golf. The site is relatively new, but growing at an incredible rate and if you take fantasy sports seriously, there is A LOT of money to be made.

A college kid from New Jersey who plays at DraftStreet (handle: “hixvillehunk” – you can’t make this stuff up), started playing at about this time last year. He made a modest deposit of $60 to get going and over the course of last baseball season turned that $60 into $60,000. He’s kept the momentum going into this season and is making a living playing fantasy baseball!

All it took was one $60 deposit from this kid an he’s now living the dream. With the site growth over the last year, he’s just one of many doing so. In June alone, 10 players won over $20k each, including $173k won by the top player of the month!

The good people at DraftStreet are so confident you’ll love the site that they’re offering a $25 deposit bonus on top of whatever you put in to get you started. Just sign up by clicking here and enter code 25bonus when you make your deposit.

DraftStreet Fantasy Contest

One Day FREE Fantasy Contest – $350 in cash prizes

As you’ve probably noticed, we’ve been running a lot of promotions with DraftStreet where we offer free, daily fantasy baseball leagues for cash prizes. All of the contests to this point have been using their Salary Cap style of drafting. We’re running another free contest this week, which will award $350 in real cash prizes, and this time around the contest will use their Pick ‘Em draft style.

Their Pick ’em leagues are much quicker and simpler than the Salary Cap leagues. It takes literally 5 minutes to build a team. For these leagues, DraftStreet creates 8 tiers of players and each tier will have anywhere from 3 to 10 players in them. All you have to do is select 1 player from each tier. This game offers a balance of being able to create a unique team while not having to research every single player who has a game that night.

You can adjust your roster up until the contest starts on Friday June 22nd at 7:05 ET, at which time your rosters will lock and the Live Scoreboard will be available.

I’ll be playing under the name DavidPinto, so see if you can beat my eight!

DraftStreet Fantasy Contest

Felipe Paulino

Baseball Musings has been running promotions with DraftStreet.com since the start of the season. DraftStreet has really changed the way fantasy sports are played by replacing the traditional season-long style leagues with quick hitting, one-night and one-week leagues.

Now, with a user-base of over 150,000 players DraftStreet has decided to crown one champion of fantasy baseball with the DraftStreet Baseball Championship. This incredible promotion will award $200,000 over the next 2 months, with the champion winning $35k. There will be 40 finalists, which will be determined by 40 qualifying events. Ten of the qualifiers will be $11 to enter, ten will be $22 to enter, ten will be $55 to enter, and ten will be $109 to enter. Each qualifier will award at least $1,500 in additional cash prizes.

Once the field of 40 is set, there will be a 2-day event where each finalist chooses a different team each day and the top 12 finishers move on to a single-elimination tournament. As mentioned earlier, the winner of this tournament receives $35,000! So, one $11 entry can get you $35,000.

DraftStreet is so confident that you’ll love their site that they are giving us an incredible promotion. They’re providing us with a free league for Wednesday night where the top 15 finishers automatically get entered into the $11 DSBC qualifier for Friday, June 8th. If that wasn’t enough, they’ll be awarding an additional $100 in prizes to be distributed among the top 4 finishers. I’ll be competing, too. Look for the team named DavidPinto to see how I’m doing. I hope all of you destroy my team! Remember, you can use the Day by Day Database to do your research.

Each MLB player has been assigned a price based on their expected fantasy performance.

I’ll be playing against you. My team name is DavidPinto, and this week I went back to my original way of choosing, starting with the fielding end of the defensive spectrum and looking for value at shortstop, catcher, second base, and centerfield before moving to the corners. I also took particular care to try to select hitters facing weak pitching. That left me enough money to pick two very good starting pitchers.

You can adjust your roster up until the contest starts on Friday May 25th at 7:05 ET at which time your rosters will lock and the Live Scoreboard will be available.

Look for the Baseball Musings team under the name DavidPinto on the leader boards. The team was easy to assemble, and I liked that players receive points for their entire lines, so stolen bases don’t overwhelm more meaningful stats. A four for four night with two home runs will beat a two for four night with two steals easily.

This week I’m trying to create a team that’s made up of hot hitters. The cold hitters team I assembled last time stayed cold. Maybe the hot hitters will stay hot. I’ll continue to try different scenarios as the season progresses.

Remember, the Day by Day Database provides plenty of tools to help in selecting your team. You can find the hot sluggers, check out batters against a pitcher, and even see how a starter performs in a particular park.
