Is This a Lucas Duda Production?

The Mets are combining Stand up to Cancer with Star Wars Tuesday night.

As a part of the Stand Up to Cancer campaign and the release of the Star Wars Blu-ray release, the Mets will have special contest and prizes for all fans of the epic movie series. Fans are encouraged to dressed in their finest Jedi, Sith or whoever your favorite character is from the Star Wars series.

There will also be a very special photo opportunity with your favorite Star Wars Characters in the Bullpen Plaza.

I suspect the droids available for photo ops are not the droids you’re looking for. 🙂

Disaster Relief

Bobby Valentine is heading an effort to raise funds for Japanese disaster relief. From the press release:

Guests at Stamford on the Sound, an outdoor, tented event, will sample an array of the highest caliber of wines produced by the world’s most prestigious wineries. Attendees will also have the opportunity to savor a variety of culinary specialties from the area’s best-known eateries and catering facilities, as well as from leading restaurants in New York City. While enjoying the food and wine, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction featuring an array of items including one-of-a-kind sports memorabilia to trips and get away weekends.

Bobby Valentine’s interest in helping the victims of the disaster is both professional and personal, having lived and managed the Chiba Motte Marines in Japan for almost seven years. “Japan needs all of the help we are able to provide,” enthuses Valentine. “Everyone involved in this effort is committed to making sure that the money raised directly assists the victims of the earthquake and tsunami. It will take time for Japan to recover, and it will require both short-term emergency assistance and long-term aid. I am committed to a sustained effort to assist Japan’s recovery effort.”

Among the confirmed guests are a variety of baseball greats, including former New York Knicks Player Herb Williams, former New York Mets and New York Yankees player Darryl Strawberry, former pitcher for the New York Mets David Cone, former Major League Baseball player, coach, and manager Lee Mazzilli, American Major League Baseball executive for the New York Yankees Brian Cashman, and former General Manager of the New York Mets Omar Minaya. For $100, you get to eat, drink and meet good food, good wine and baseball stars. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday evening and help disaster victims.

Granderson Gives Back

Curtis Granderson donated $50,000 worth of equipment to South Bronx baseball and softball.

Ever since the city banned the use of metal bats in high school leagues in the spring of 2007, players and teams have been coping with the myriad issues that accompanied the switch to wood: how to manufacture runs with a less potent weapon; how to raise money to buy wooden bats, which tend to break easily; and how to mollify parents who dip into their wallets to buy wooden bats only to see them demolished with one swing.

Good for Granderson. Maybe the city should re-examine this rule since new aluminum bats perform more like wooden ones.

Miguel Tejada in Haiti

Miguel Tejada went to Haiti to help in relief efforts there.

“It’s really sad when you see people in Haiti … they’re like brothers to us,” Tejada said. “I have four people from Haiti working in my house — and they’re beautiful people. They are great people. Like I said, that’s why I came here. I think everybody in the Dominican is trying to do the best they can.”

Good for him, and it’s great to see the DR helping their neighbors.

Koufax to Speak

Sandy Koufax agreed to help out Joe Torre’s charity by sitting for a public interview. I hope it gets recorded so all of us can see it eventually.

The thing about Koufax is that while he ranks as one of baseball’s biggest living enigmas, it’s not as if he lives life as a hermit. He’s often seen quietly dabbling around the Dodgers and has worked as a spring training instructor. (True story: Mariano Duncan had to help me pick my jaw off the ground when I saw Koufax in Vero Beach a few spring trainings ago.)

But to hear that Koufax is willing to open up about his life and career — even if it’s just for a short while — is just the kind of news that’s even more welcome in a week like this one.

There’s no such Thing as a Sanity Clause

The charitable donation clause that was supposed to be in every Dodgers contract after Manny Ramirez signed one didn’t show up in Jamey Carroll’s contract.

The players’ union filed a grievance earlier this year, saying that Ramirez and more than 100 other players from 22 teams, including the Dodgers and Angels, should not have to make a combined $6 million in donations to club charities last season. The union said such donations were improperly mandated; the owners said the donations were freely negotiated.

The grievance is still pending, said Major League Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney. In the meantime, he said, teams have not been told to avoid contractual provisions for donations to club charities.

Maurer said Carroll actively participates in charitable efforts, including the Garth Brooks Foundation, and would be happy to donate to the Dodgers Dream Foundation. However, he said Carroll’s contract does not require such a donation.

I suspect the MLBPA will use Carroll’s contract to win the grievance.

Here’s footage of Ramirez’s negotiations.

Santana Clause

Via MetsBlog.com, The New York Times follows Johan Santana to Venezuela, where among other things, he distributes Christmas presents.

He organizes the Cy Youngazo, or the Great Cy Young, where he hands out Christmas presents to children and organizes local soccer and baseball tournaments. Through his foundation, he pursues his dream of someday building a baseball stadium in Tovar specifically for children.

During this year’s event, young boys stood slack-jawed and old men whistled their appreciation as he walked by. He was continually stopped by people either asking for autographs or just wanting to shake his hand.

There have been a number of ballplayers over the years who invested their earnings to make their home towns better. I remember Fernando Valenzuela building a school in his town in Mexico. Good for Johan.

Shirt Donations

John Stossel reports on what happens to the World Champion clothing with the losing team’s name on it:

It used to be destroyed; Major League Baseball didn’t like the idea of licensed products celebrating the wrong team. But a few years ago, in a burst of common sense, the league and retailers struck a deal with World Vision, a Christian aid group:

Instead of going into an incinerator, the new clothes now go to people in need.

Of course, in a few weeks some American who has been isolated in Africa is going to think the wrong team won the World Series. 🙂

Good for MLB, although I’m sure you’re paying for the donated shirt as well when you buy one for the actual winner. Just know that extra cost is going to a cause.

Girardi Benefit

I received this via email today:

Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who was the catcher for David Cone’s perfect game for the Bronx Bombers in 1999, will present his battery mate with the Jerry Girardi Award on June 15 at Girardi’s “Catch 25” benefit to assist Alzheimer’s research. The gala will be held at New York City’s Grand Central Oyster Bar. Girardi’s father is afflicted with Alzheimer’s. Cone will receive the second annual award. Girardi was last year’s inaugural recipient. Food Network host Sara Moulton and ESPNews anchor Mike Yam will also be among the honorees. Ortiz Gives Back

David Ortiz will give away tickets to Red Sox games this season:

The Red Sox slugger announced on Sunday the creation of his Papi Cares 2009 initiative. It will be a season-long ticket program that will provide families facing difficult financial problems, due to the weak economy, the opportunity to attend games. A different family will be selected for each home game for the entire season.

There’s a reason the fans love Ortiz so much (this and the walk-off home runs)!
