Unexpected Performance

Tyler Matzek made his MLB debut Wednesday night as the starting pitcher for the Rockies. So far, he pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out seven. Tyler owned a very good strikeout rate in the minors, 8.5 per nine innings, but averaged six walks per nine innings. That came down a bit since the start of the 2013 season to the middle fours, but to see a poor control pitcher exhibit such great control in his debut, especially at Coors Field, is impressive. He only threw 71 pitches so far, so he may go the distance. He’s sitting on an 8-0 lead over the Braves as the teams go to the eighth inning.

Update: Matzek runs out of gas in the eighth, allowing the first three batters to reach via hits and giving up a run. This will still go into the books as a first great start. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.
