New GM Contrasts

Baseball Think Factory highlights this quote by the new Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich on the moves the Rockies made so far this off-season:

“It would be easy for somebody in my shoes, a brand-new GM, a young GM, to want to come in and make a splash, do something sexy,” Bridich said this winter. “I fought that urge, but I’m not going to say it wasn’t there.

“We’ve been close-ish to a few things. But it hasn’t happened, hasn’t worked out. We’re not going to panic. … We have to remember the type of talent that we have here.”

Neither article mentions it, but something sexy is exactly what new GM AJ Preller did in San Diego. Now, it could be the Padres had more talent to deal than the Rockies, or it could be that Preller was better at matching his talent to the needs of other organizations. Over the next few years, we’ll see how this all works out. I certainly expect the Padres to be better than the Rockies this season, but a quick fix may not hold up in the long term.
