Wade Miley and John Farrell argued in the dugout Thursday evening:
It’s unclear what sparked the confrontation, but Miley could have been upset about being removed from the game. Long man Steven Wright was warming in the bullpen at the start of the fourth inning, before Miley allowed his fifth run of the game.
This is not the first time Miley has had a run-in with his manager in the dugout. He got into a heated exchange with then-manager Kirk Gibson after being removed from a game early last September while with the Diamondbacks.
The Red Sox are losing 6-5 in the eighth inning.
Do managers survive these run ins? Kirk Gibson didn’t. Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson arguing in the dugout led to Martin’s first Yankees firing. I was watching the NESN post-game after Wednesday’s loss, and the studio personnel were not kind to the home town team. Seeing the manager publicly argue with a player leads to the feeling that the manager is not in control.
If ownership has the manager’s back, trade the hot-headed player. Send a message to Ortiz: you are 39 and not hitting lefties at all. Or threaten to bring back Bobby Valentine.
I applaud Farrell for taking him out when he thought he was done, rather than waiting for the magical 5 inning/100 pitch mark. I watch TC mishandle Mets pitchers all the time…
Miley comes off as a petulant crybaby: “I was terrible, and it’s all your fault!”
