Mets or Giants?

Which team would you rather root for right now? The Mets beat the Giants Wednesday afternoon 4-1, a high scoring game for New York. The Mets are one game better than the Giants, 44-42 compared to 43-43. Yet, I read very little positive about the Mets. Despite their lack of offense, the Mets are 5-5 in their last 10 games. The Giants are going through a bit of an offensive slump themselves, but are just 2-8 in the same span.

Despite their trials and tribulations, New York is just three games out in the division race. The Giants are 4 1/2 games back, both teams in second place. The perception I get from reading news articles is that it’s just a matter of time before the Mets fall apart completely, and the front office is to blame for not spending money. The Giants recently got a number of injured players back, so maybe their fans feel they are do for an upswing.

The Mets are having a good season, especially compared to recent years. Fans should be happy about that. Maybe the offense comes back, and with their great pitching they win more games than expected. Maybe the Nationals remain maimed, and the Mets catch them. I suppose part of the difference is that the Mets built up expectations in the off-season, while the Giants simply won three World Series titles in five years. Mets fans, however, should probably lighten up a bit and enjoy what may be their first season over .500 since 2008.

Much of the Mets’ woes are due to the fact that
their OBP is so poor- Lagares, Flores, Tejada seldom walk and play a LOT, but while playing have not hit all that well. I think Flores WILL hit, but do not see much hope for the other 2. Cuddyer is equally bad and will not improve, although he might get hot at some point. The problem is that these players are good enough to give the Mets’ front office hope that they will improve and the $$ issues keep them from seeking true improvement. Tejada is the #2 hitter in the lineup now…geeez
