Greinke Takes the Lead

Zack Greinke extended his scoreless inning streak to 35 2/3 innings Thursday night, putting more than halfway to the record held by former Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser. Greinke joined his teammate Clayton Kershaw in two days of dominance over the Phillies, in which the two combined for no walks and 21 strikeouts.

The scoreless streak raised Greinke to the lead in Tom Tango Cy Young Tracker points as he passes Max Scherzer. The two pitched the same number of innings. Greinke allowed ten fewer runs this season, which Scherzer struck out 37 more batters.

Greinke is just not pitching scoreless innings, he is totally dominating the opposition. He allowed just 16 hits and three walks, the most damage against him coming from three doubles. The opposition is slugging .157 against Greinke during the streak. All the hits against him came with none on or a man on first, and all the doubles came with the bases empty. I’m surprised he hasn’t thrown a no-hitter in the run.

Stay tuned. This could wind up being a great race down the stretch between Scherzer and Greinke.

He just might be better right now than he was in ’09. Through 18 starts…

    2009: 2.12 ERA
    2015: 1.39 ERA

I’d be willing to bet that the massively lower ERA is a reflection of better stats in other areas like SLG, GB%, WPA, RE24, & stuff.
