Dombrowski Out

I did not see this coming:

Dave Dombrowski has been released from his contract as Detroit Tigers general manager and Al Avila, who served as the team’s assistant GM, will replace Dombrowski.

“I feel this is the right time for the Tigers to move forward under new leadership,” owner Mike Ilitch said in a statement Tuesday.

I thought that maybe Dombrowski might step down, as the Tigers owner seems to want to win at all costs, and Dombrowski really doesn’t operate that way. He’s a long term builder, and one of the great ones. I worked with ESPN at the expansion draft for the Marlins and Rockies, and Dombrowski came to give us a briefing. He was clearly extremely intelligent, and his work over the years proves he understands how to build a team. The Phillies might be wise to try to snag him.
