Collins Extended

Terry Collins reward for taking the Mets to the World Series is a two-year contract extension.

At 66, Collins is already the oldest manager in baseball, and he has indicated in recent weeks that he hoped to get one more contract to manage. Jim Leyland, Collins’s mentor and friend, retired from managing at the age of 69. Collins will be 68 when his new contract expires.

Earlier this season, Collins’s job status appeared to be in jeopardy.

I thought it might be in jeopardy after the game five debacle. The Mets did the right thing, however.

I don’t see how this is the right thing. His ability to manage when it matters most, is totally questionable to me. Good thing for him that I’m not in charge of the Mets hiring. I’d have canned him & maybe replaced him with Mattingly.

Devon » I think this is a bit different than the Grady Little situation. The Red Sox front office did not get along with Little, and leaving Pedro in the game allowed them to make the move. Everyone seems to get along with Collins.

All Lucas Duda had to do was make a major-league throw home and the game would have been over and no one would be talking about Collins’s decision. Of course you could also say that Collins might not have been in that exact position if Cespedes had caught Escobar’s fly ball, if Wright hadn’t made an error in the 14th inning of game 1, if Murphy hadn’t made an error in game 4, perhaps if Cespedes hadn’t gotten doubled-off to end game 4, if Wright had taken a second to look Hosmer back to the bag … am I forgetting something? It was like all the outlandish things that happened in the first two series that led to Mets’ victories – Murphy’s steal of third when it was uncovered, Murphy’s hot streak, the passed ball on strike 3 that let the go-ahead run score — were reversed in five games against the Royals.

Karma is a bitch and, the truth is, as a Mets fan I’m fine with it all. It was a great season and the best team won. Looking forward to next year.
