The Mariners and Rangers pulled off a five-player swap:
Dipoto completed a five-player trade with the Texas Rangers, acquiring outfielder Leonys Martin and right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass in exchange for reliever Tom Wilhelmsen, outfielder James Jones and a player to named later.
The Mariners appear to have acquired Martin for his defense. Over his career, FanGraphs has his offensive runs at -17.8, his defensive runs at +30.2. He is coming off a very poor offensive year. While he’s unlikely to ever be a great offensive player, a bounce back to his 2014 numbers would make him a very useful player based on his defense.
Bass should be helped with home run by Seattle’s home stadium, and he improved his walk rate recently.
For Texas, they get a high strike out, high walk reliever in Wilhelmsen. Jones has not come close to his minor league hitting numbers in a small amount of time in the majors. Given his age, he doesn’t have much time to prove himself.
The Mariners have the most upside in this trade, but only if Martin’s bat bounces back.
