The pitches Andrew Miller threw to David Ortiz that caused Big Papi to cry like a little girl were pretty good pitches according to PITCHf/x. Pitch five was clearly a strike, while pitch six was on the edge and could have gone either way.

If it says that pitch 6 was on the edge, then Pitchf/x is miscalibrated. Pitch 5 was marginal; pitch 6 was clearly not a strike, clearly below the knees.
The interesting question is whether Kulpa would have called pitch 6 a strike if Ortiz/Farrell hadn’t complained about pitch 5. If the answer is yes, then he just blew it. If the answer is no, then he intentionally biased his call, and that’s even worse.
Of course, this is not the first beef that Red Sox fans have ever had with Ron Kulpa…
Pitch 5 fooled both the hitter and catcher, probably a missed sign as there was a runner on second. But it was a strike.Ortiz just feels entitled. Retirement can’t come soon enough.
Like a little girl? Do little girls cry differently than little boys?
Is Ortiz a DH because he plays defense like a girl?
rbj » I also wonder how many time Ortiz yelled at an ump when he got the ball call on an edge pitch.
