Undefeated pitchers Mat Latos and Cole Hamels square off as the White Sox face the Rangers. Latos is not striking out many batters, but he’s not giving up many hits either. With a low walk rate, opponents are hitting .238 against Latos with a .296 OBP. Hamels beat 5-0 Jordan Zimmermann his last time out, so Cole will try to repeat the feat. The opposition is just 5 for 34 against him with runners in scoring position.
The Blue Jays send Marcus Stroman against the Mariners and Taijuan Walker. Stroman is now 8-0 in 11 starts since returning from injury late in 2015 with a 2.92 ERA. Eight of the 11 starts qualify as quality. Walker is being extremely stingy with walks, issuing just three free passes in 32 innings this season.
The strangest match-up of the day pits Jordan Zimmermann against his old team, the Nationals, while Max Scherzer faces his old team, the Tigers. Zimmermann shows the same great control he demonstrated with Washington, with just eight walks in 41 innings this season. Scherzer’s weakness is the home run ball this season. Nine balls left the park against him already, and opponents are slugging a healthy .484.
Finally, the Mets visit the Dodgers with Noah Syndergaard battling Kenta Maeda. Syndergaard’s big improvement this season comes from limiting long balls. After allowing 19 home runs in 150 innings last season, he gave up just one in 38 1/3 innings this year. Opponents are just 2 for 23 with runners in scoring position against Maeda. He’s ripe to regress to the mean in that situation.
Enjoy!
