Braden Shipley take on Noah Syndergaard as the Diamondbacks finish their series with the Mets. Shipley makes the fourth start of his season and career. So far, his numbers don’t inspire much confidence as he walked 11 while striking out just 10 in 17 1/3 innings. The four home runs allowed hurt also. Syndergaard comes in with a 2.64 ERA. As a point of comparison, Syndergaard walked 27 batters this season in 129 1/3 innings.
Thursday finishes with the best pitching match-up of the day as old rivals the Cardinals and Cubs send Carlos Martinez and Jon Lester to the mound. The Cubs go for their 10th win in a row, while the Cardinals need a sweep of Chicago to have a chance at winning the division. Martinez makes his seventh start against the Cubs. He is 3-1 in the first six, but with a 5.40 ERA. Lester owns a 1.99 ERA at Wrigley this season, holding opponents to a .194/.258/.314 slash line at home.
