Aptly Named

Trea Turner leads off the bottom of the first with his fifth triple of the season, in his 104th at bat. He is impressively fast, and watching the play, I thought if there was a bobble he would easily score.

So five triples in 100 at bats works out to 30 triples in 600 at bats, six shy of Chief Wilson‘s record of 36 in 1912. That gives you an idea of how difficult this record would be to break. On top of that, the extra base is often not worth the risk, so as players mature, they tend to be a little more careful going to third with 0 or 2 out. Anyway, a very high triple total is something to watch for next season from the aptly named Trea Turner.

Daniel Murphy homers to give the Nationals a 2-1 lead after Freddie Freeman homered for the Braves in the top of the first.

Update: Turner homers in his second plate appearance to give the Nationals a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Turner now owns the difficult half of the cycle.

Update: Turner singled his third time up, in the bottom of the fifth. He scores another run on the second triple of the game by Ben Revere. Turner just needs a double for the cycle, but he might be too fast to stop at second. 🙂

Update: Turner grounds out to end the sixth. With the Nationals leading 7-1, it might be tough to get another PA for Turner.

Update: With two out in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Nationals pick up two singles to bring Turner to the plate. He pops out to end the inning with the Nationals leading 7-2.
