The Better Streak

In June, Bryce Harper put together a 13-game hit streak. It seemed to be one of those hit streaks that wasn’t very impressive. He collected just one hit in 11 of the 13 games, and while a .315/.403/.537 slash line is great, Harper didn’t seem all that hot. It’s a testament to his talent that we’ve come to expect more.

Harper extended his current hit streak to 12 games on Monday with a two for four day, also walking once. He has six multi-hit games in the streak, with five home runs and three doubles. His slash line during the 12 games is .426/.526/.809. He scored 17 runs and drove in 14. Anyway you look at it, this is a much hotter streak.

What I’ve heard in the broadcasts is that Harper dial his swing back a bit, trying to make more contact. He struck out 6 times his 47 AB, 12.8%. For the year he struck out 73 times in 322 at bats, 22.7%. He’s making more contact, he’s still making solid contact, he has not lost his eye for the strike zone, and the ball is still leaving the park. His mechanical adjustment appears to be working just fine.

The Nationals beat the Reds 6-1 for the series sweep.
