What a Relief

The Yankees beat the Twins 8-4 Tuesday night to win the American League Wild Card game. It was a mighty night for the Yankees bullpen, as Luis Severino lasted just 1/3 of an inning, allowing three runs. The pen went 8 2/3 innings, giving up one run on a home run ground out, walking three, and striking out 13. If you think of the four relievers as one starter, it was a masterful performance.

As for Severino, it just appeared to be a bad night:

“It was difficult,” Severino said. “I didn’t do my job. I couldn’t command my pitches. … [Warming up] in the bullpen, I was awesome. My changeup and slider were working, but when I took the mound, I lost the feeling for them, and I paid for it.”

He’s willing to start game one of the ALDS.

This game reminded me of the last regular season game the two teams played. The Twins got off to an early 3-0 lead, but the Yankees roared back in the bottom of the inning with three runs to tie, then just kept piling on the runs. This offense, healthy now, is tough to stop.

New York moves on to Cleveland for game one on Thursday.

Correction: The bullpen did not allow a home run, Severino gave up both dingers.

Bullpen didn’t allow a HR. It was 3-0 when Severino left the game, and the only run the Twins scored after that was on a ground ball out in the 3rd…
