Games of the Day

It is a difficult day to figure out where baseball will actually be played today. The games in Minnesota and Cleveland were already postponed, and the two games scheduled in Detroit look iffy. Cincinnati, New York, Chicago, and Boston might be in store for some bad weather, too.

Washington might be spared, as the Rockies and Nationals finish their series with Tyler Anderson taking on Stephen Strasburg. Anderson owns a 4.19 career ERA despite a good strikeout rate and a great walk rate. He allowed 30 home runs in 214 2/3 innings. He actually get hit harder on the road. Strasburg, at 32-9, .780, owns the highest winning percentage among pitchers with at least 30 starts since the start of the 2016 season.

Shohei Ohtani makes his weekly pitching start for the Angels. He’ll face the Royals in Kansas City with Eric Skoglund on the mound in opposition. The Angels appear to be keeping him on the Japanese ace schedule, pitching him each Sunday. So far, so good, as he allowed four hits in 13 innings while striking out 18. Skoglund, in 22 2/3 MLB innings walked 14 batters and allowed three home runs. He did post excellent walk rates in the minors.

Zack Godley takes on actual pitching god Clayton Kershaw as the Diamondbacks go for a sweep of the Dodgers. Godley struck out 12 and walked one in his first 14 innings of the season, leading to just one run against him. Kershaw has yet to win this season despite a 1.89 ERA. The Dodgers scored a total of three runs in his starts.

Finally, Bartolo Colon faces Justin Verlander as the Rangers conclude their series in Houston. Colon is off to a great start, having walked just one batter in his first 11 innings. Opponents are 4 for 13 against him with runners on base, but just one for six with runners in scoring position. Colon is bending, but not breaking. Verlander’s Astros career continues to be amazing, as he allowed eight runs in eight starts, seven of those eight runs scoring on the six homers he allowed. Against Verlander, it’s go long or go home.

Enjoy!

There’s going to be no games in Detroit. Here in Toledo my dogs want to go to the park. They’re going to be rained out for the second day in a row.
