Close, but Not Close

The Nationals beat the Marlins 14-12 in a barn burner Thursday night. The Marlins knocked around Jeremy Hellickson, leading 9-0 by the middle of the fourth inning. The Nationals stormed back with 14 unanswered runs, led by Trea Turner. Turner homered twice, the second a grand slam to give Washington a 10-9 lead.

The game is interesting in relation to the recent talk about closeness scores. This will go in the books as just another two run game. The closeness score came in at 4.47, however, which is high. The median closeness score for a game is in the low twos. There was really nothing close about this game except for the final score. The Marlins were winning a blow out, then the Nationals were winning a blow out, and a few runs at the end made it close. The game had a very different feel than a slugfest in which teams trade a lead often.
