Fixing the Leake

Mike Leake turned around the worst start of his career with a near-perfect game against the Angels Friday night.

Leake retired the first 24 batters he faced, Daniel Vogelbach hit a pair of three-run homers and the Mariners defeated the Los Angeles Angels 10-0 on Friday night at T-Mobile Park.

They were the same Angels that seven days earlier had no-hit the Mariners in a 13-0 win, with Leake giving up seven runs — four earned — in just two-thirds of an inning, the shortest start of his 10-year big-league career.

Here are the two starts side by side. Note that the only two outs Leake recorded last week were on strikeouts. Everything the opposition put in play ended in a good result. Friday night, Leake’s struck out just six batters, so almost everything put in play against him found a glove.
