Annoying Celebrations

The game between the Rangers and Athletics featured Ramon Laureano homering, then later getting hit by a pitch. This of course led to a bench clearing altercation. I really like the take on the situation by Rangers manager Chris Woodward:

“We have a runner at first with two outs, the last thing we thought about was trying to hit him right there,” Woodward said. “Laureano plays really hard and he’s very passionate. A lot of times that passion comes out in ways that will maybe annoy the other team. We have a few guys like that.”

There’s a fine line here. Some players will be annoyed by any type of celebration of their failure. Some players will go out of their way to make their celebrations annoying. I suspect both sides need to take it down a notch, since MLB is now officially condoning showing joy at success on the field.

On top of that, hitting a batter is incredibly dangerous. No matter how much someone annoys you, there is no reason to engage in an activity that might lead to serious injury or death. Strike the guy out next time.
