Team Offense 2020

The Team Offense series kicks off soon. The Lineup Analysis Tool takes the Musings Marcels projections for the predicted lineup for each team and predicts runs per game for that lineup. It also shows the best and worst configurations based on the Marcels. It’s a nice first look at offensive strength and managerial strategy. You can find the methodology in this post from 2018. I will be keeping track of the progress on this spreadsheet.

I added a sheet to the 2019 results. It shows how the prediction for the probable lineup compares to the actual runs per game for the team in 2019. There is an accompanying graph. Nineteen teams exceeded expectations. One thing the Marcels can’t do is predict a league wide rise in offense. Still, eighteen teams, or 60%, were within a quarter run of the prediction. The biggest outliers were the Twins and Diamondbacks, both nearly outscoring their prediction by one run, and the Tigers, finishing nearly a run below their prediction. The correlation was 0.7.
