One of the reasons for pushing the Day by Day Database back to 1920 is to have a more complete look at the history of the Bill James Starting Pitcher Ranks. Over the winter I created a database table to hold the daily ranks. This takes some time to calculate, and the data now goes back to 1966. That covers the complete career of Tom Seaver. It’s a nice example of how consistently great he pitched, as he stayed in the top ten from May 5, 1969 until June 26, 1980, just over eleven seasons. My aim is to push this back to 1940, the last season that has enough data to cover everyone with a complete career.
