The majors leagues saw six games played on April 20, 1920. The low scoring event took place in Brooklyn, where the Dodgers took home a 1-0, eleven inning win against the Braves. The Indians and Tigers played the high scoring game of the day. Both teams hit double digits as the Cleveland fans witnessed an 11-10 Indians win. Detroit was down 11-5 at one point, scoring five runs in the eighth inning to make it close.

The best offensive game of the day came from Tillie Walker of the Athletics. He launched two home runs and drove in three runs, but Washington beat the Athletics 8-5. That represented 1/3 of the home runs hit on the day. Walker led the majors with eleven home runs in 1918. From 1920 to the end of 1922, the last three productive years of Walker’s career, he would be second to Babe Ruth in home runs, hitting 77 to Ruth’s 148.

The best pitched game of the day goes to Leon Cadore of Brooklyn who earned the shutout in the eleven inning Dodgers win. He allowed seven hits, no walks, and struck out four, a game score of 87. Eppa Rixey of the Phillies allowed one hit during his seven innings of shutout ball against the Giants. He was lifted for pinch hitter Gavvy Cravath in the eighth inning. Cravath homered for the games only runs, and the Phillies won 3-0.

The 1917-1920 seasons were the peak of Cadore’s career. He did not pitch much in 1918 due to WWI, but in the other three seasons combined for an rWAR of 14.9. One of his claims to fame was catching the sparrow that Casey Stengel put under his hat, do it would fly out when he tipped his cap to the fans.
