This Date in 1920

Bad weather wiped out 75% of the schedule on April 27, 1920. The two games played both ended 3-2. The Reds beat the Cardinals at home, while Cleveland won in the bottom of the ninth inning against the White Sox on two singles followed by a sacrifice fly by Charlie Jamieson. The White Sox were the last undefeated team in the majors that season.

The first of those singles was by Doc Johnston, who rates tied for the best offensive game of the day with his teammate Larry Gardner. Johnston went three for four with a double, while Gardner finished two for three with a walk and a triple. Johnston was a poor hitter for a first baseman, even in the days of little power. For his career he hit .263/.319/.351, and accumulated just three rWAR in parts of eleven seasons. Gardner played third base and had a long productive stretch. He did a good job getting on base, and averaged nearly four rWAR from 1910 through 1921, twelve seasons.

Johnston held the fourth longest hit streak in the majors through that date, eight games.

Dutch Ruether of the Reds collects the honor of best pitcher of the day, as all four starters pitch complete games. He allowed two runs on five hits and four walks, striking out just two. Over his career, Ruether would walk 31 more men than he struck out.
