Clase Closed

Recently acquired Indians reliever Emmanuel Clase will likely miss the 2020 season due to a PED suspension.

Clase was acquired from the Texas Rangers this winter in Cleveland’s trade of two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber. The commissioner’s office said the 22-year-old Clase tested positive for Boldenone, an anabolic steroid.

The hard-throwing right-hander was expected to have a major role at the back end of the Indians’ bullpen this season.

His suspension will start when the season commences. When the Rangers traded Clase, I thought the Indians were getting someone who could help:

He will play 2020 as a 22-year-old, and showed in the minors the ability to develop his stuff, lowering his walk rate and his home run rate as he progressed through the system. He’s made some starts, too, and as the opener strategy becomes more popular, he would be a very good fit in that role.

He might have improved for a different reason given the test.
