This Date in 1920

The majors see eleven of twelve scheduled games played on July 10, 1920. Three of the four scheduled doubleheaders go to completion, but wet grounds wash out the second game between the Dodgers and Cardinals in St. Louis. Game one of the Braves at the World Champion Reds results in a 1-0 Boston win, the low scoring game of the day. Game one of the Phillies at the Pirates sees Philadelphia win 8-7 in 11 innings, the high scoring game of the day. The Phillies sweep the Pirates, while the Reds split with the Braves.

Irish Meusel of the Phillies, possibly jealous of his brother’s headlines the previous day, takes home best offensive game of the day honors. He collects five hits in six plate appearances in the high scoring game one of the doubleheader, hitting a double and driving in three runs. Meusel would wind up with the Giants part way through the 1921 season and would play against his brother in the 1921 and 1922 World Series.

Tris Speaker, reportedly injured the day before, goes five for eight with a double and a walk as the Indians split a double header with the Senators, Washington scoring two runs in both games. George Sisler, with a three for four day leads Speaker in the race for the AL Batting Average title .419 to .414.

On the pitching side, Joe Oeschger of the Braves win the best pitched game of the day. He pitches a three-hit shutout in the 1-0 win over the Reds. Oeschger walks three and strikes out three. He still leads the NL in home runs allowed with seven. In his last seven games, including five starts, Oeschger is 4-1 with a 2.35 ERA.

Babe Ruth his his 26th home run of the season, and is now just three home runs away from tying the single season home run record he set the previous year.

The Yankees win and the Indians split put the two teams in a virtual tie for first place, the Indians a game up in the loss column .004 points ahead in winning percentage. The White Sox 6-0 win over the Athletics leaves them 3 1/2 games back,

The Dodgers win and the Reds spilt gives Brooklyn a one game lead in the NL pennant race. Some distance opened up between the leaders and the rest of the pack as the Cubs sit in third place 4 1/2 games back, the Cardinals five back in fourth place, and the Pirates with two losses to the Phillies fall to six games back.
