Best Batter Today

Alex Bregman of the Astros stays atop the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings despite a poor night at the plate, going 0 for 5 with a walk in a 13 inning game. The Dodgers win that one 4-2. The man on second did not lead to a lot of scoring. Both teams plated a single run in the 11th inning to extend the game. Max Muncy of the Dodgers went 1 for 5 with a walk for fourth place, while teammate Justin Turner went 0 for 5 for fourth place.

Nelson Cruz of the Twins doubled in four trips as the Minnesota beats St. Louis 3-0. He remains in second place. Anthony Rendon of the Angels draws two walks in five trips to move into third place. The Mariners win that game 10-7.

The fall in offense is pretty glaring right now. Walks and strikeouts are up about .5 per game compared to games through the end of July last season. Home runs are down about 0.3 per game. It’s the other hits that took a nose dive, from 14.6 per game down to 12.7 per game. Games are producing 9.1 runs versus 9.7, so scoring isn’t horrible, but the march toward the total three-true outcome game continues.
