All nine scheduled games see action on August 24, 1920. The two low scoring games of the day came in the deja vu double header in Philadelphia, as the Browns beat the Athletics 3-1 in both ends of the twin bill. At the high end of scoring, the Senators hosted the White Sox, Washington winning 8-5.
Tony Boeckel of the Braves post the best offensive game of the day, but the Cubs win the game 3-2. Boeckel is perfect at the plate with a four for four day, including two doubles. It is Boeckel’s second time gaining the honor.
Bill Bayne of the Browns takes home best pitched game of the day honors in game one of the doubleheader. He goes the distance, giving up six hits, five walks, and one unearned run, striking out three. More walks than strikeouts were not unusual for Bayne. For his career, he averaged 4.0 BB per 9 IP and 3.5 K per 9 IP.
George Sisler of the Browns goes three for eight in the twin bill to end the day with a .404 BA and the AL lead. He now leads Tris Speaker of the Indians by seven points as Speaker goes 0 for 1 on the day as the Indians lose to the Red Sox 7-2.
There is no change in the AL pennant race as the Yankees also lose, the Tigers beating them 5-3. The White Sox own a two game lead over Cleveland and a three game lead over the Yankees.
In the NL, the Reds beat the Phillies 7-2 while the Dodgers fall 4-3 in Pittsburgh, and the Cardinals beat the Giants 6-4. The Reds now lead the Dodgers by one game and the Giants by three games. Right now, the 1919 World Series opponents look like they are headed for a repeat.
In the news, the Yankees announce they will build a new stadium by 1922. They were a year optimistic.
