This Date in 1920

All nine scheduled in the majors played to completion on August 30, 1920, including two pennant important doubleheaders. The Pirates swept the Giants in a Pittsburgh twin bill, the 2-1 nightcap standing as the low scoring game of the day. At the high end, the Tigers defeated the Athletics in Philadelphia 9-5. The news story noted that due to team injuries, the A’s used a catcher in leftfield and a first baseman in rightfield, and their poor play led to Detroit runs. Glenn Myatt in left and Dick Burrus in right each made an error, resulting in two unearned runs.

Ross Youngs of the Giants wins best offensive game of the day in game one of their doubleheader, won by the Pirates 4-2. Youngs goes five for five from the three hole, all singles. That left Young’s slash line for the season up to this point at .335/.413/.467. He would go 0 for 4 in game two.

Sad Sam Jones of the Red Sox shuts out the White Sox to gain the honor of best pitched game of the day. He limited the AL leaders to five hits and one walk while striking out four in the 4-0 win. Jones pitched great against the White Sox on the season so far, going 5-0 in five starts with a 1.00 ERA. The win puts his total at eleven.

Tris Speaker of the Indians goes one for five in the 8-2 win over the Senators. That drops his batting average to .394, now second to the idle George Sisler of the Browns. Sisler leads the AL with a .396 BA.

Irish Meusel of the Phillies is on a tear as his hit streak reaches twenty-one games.

With the Indians win, Cleveland moves 1 1/2 games behind the White Sox in third place in the AL pennant race. The idle Yankees gain 1/2 game and sit one game out of first place, but two down in the loss column.

In the NL, in addition to the Giants getting swept, the Dodgers lose both ends of a doubleheader in in St. Louis. With the Reds beating the Braves 8-2, Cincinnati moves back into first place in the NL pennant race by 1/2 game over Brooklyn. The Giants fall to 1.5 games back.
