The Yankees beat the Orioles 6-5 in the first game of their doubleheader, the game going two extra-innings for a total of nine. The big feature of the game was both teams losing the designated hitter due to defensive needs late in the game. That meant that two relief pitchers became the runner placed at second in the ninth inning, and both scored. In a year with a universal DH, that was a rare game.
When I was young (admittedly quite a while ago now), it was not uncommon for pitchers to be used as pinch-runners. With fourteen- and fifteen-man pitching staffs, I think teams should get a couple of pitchers practiced up to do that, especially if you have a pitcher with a fair amount of speed. I understand teams are worried about injury, but a professional athlete should be able to run around the bases without hurting himself.
