This Date in 1920

All six scheduled major league games played to completion on September 12, 1920. Both Chicago teams figured in the low scoring games of the day, as the Dodgers defeated the Cubs in Brooklyn and the Senators defeated the White Sox in Chicago, both 5-0 shutouts. At the high end of scoring, the Yankees came back from a 4-0 first inning deficit to down the Tigers 13-6.

Mike Menosky of the Red Sox takes home best offensive game of the day honors. This is the third time this season Menosky posted the top Baseball Musings batting game score. He performs perfectly at the plate, collecting four hits, including a home run, and a walk in five trips. His home run was part of a two-run eighth inning that broke a seven run tie as Boston beats the Browns 9-7. Menosky owns a .297 BA and a .374 OBP through this game. He stole two bases to bring his season total to 20, fourth among the league leaders.

Burleigh Grimes of the Dodgers tosses the shutout to earn best pitched game of the day. He allows four hits and one walk while striking out three, but faces only 28 batters. According to the news story, four of the five batters who reached base were eliminated by two caught stealings, a pickoff, and a double play.

Grimes is the leader of a Dodgers rotation that produced the highest average game score in the majors. The strength of the staff lies in their high K rate (for the era) and low walk rate.

The AL batting race tightens as George Sisler of the Browns and Tris Speaker of the Indians continue to hit in the .390s. Sisler goes 1 for 4 to lower his BA to .394, while Speaker posts a 2 for 3 day for a .393 BA. Sisler and Speaker struck out a combined 26 times on the season.

The Indians win to stay percentage points ahead of the Yankees, even though they remain 1/2 game back. The White Sox loss puts them 1 1/2 game behind the Yankees, and one game back of the first place Indians.

The Reds have the day off, so they lose 1/2 game to the Dodgers, as Brooklyn wins their eighth game in a row. The Reds drop 3 1/2 games back, although they are even with Brooklyn in the loss column. The Cardinals beat the Giants 6-3 at the Polo Grounds, dropping New York 4 1/2 games back. The Giants did turn a triple play in the game, however.
