This Date in 1920

All seven scheduled major league games play to completion on September 19, 1920, including a doubleheader in Detroit against the Senators. The Indians beat the Reds Sox 2-0 for the low scoring game of the day. The Tigers 9-7 victory over the Senators in game one stands at the high scoring game of the day.

Wally Gerber of the Browns brings home the best offensive game of the day in a 6-1 St. Louis win over the Yankees out west. Gerber posts a four for four day with a double, two RBI and a sacrifice. Gerber bats lead-off for the Browns, and ends the game with a .351 OBA and a .350 slugging percentage. One through seven in the Browns lineup that day all had outstanding OBAs.

Dixie Davis, who pitched the game for the Browns, takes home the best pitched game of the day. The run is earned. In addition, he allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out seven. Davis is now 5-0 in six appearances against the Yankees in 1920, posting a 1.96 ERA against them. He allowed just 27 hits in 46 innings.

George Sisler of the Browns goes two for four in the game to raise his AL leading BA to .403. Tris Speaker of the Indians also posts a two for four game to keep pace, his BA at .392. Imagine hitting .392 in September, and you’re in second place in the batting race!

The White Sox defeat the Athletics 5-4 to round out the AL contenders. In the game summary, an interesting phrasing is used:

Chicago apparently had tossed the game away in the early innings, but launched a drive in the sixth inning which drove Rommel off the mound.

The Giants keep pace by beating the World Champion Reds 7-6 in eleven innings. The Giants remain in second place five games back, while the Reds fall to seven back (even with the Giants in the loss column). Brooklyn’s magic number drops to six against both teams.
