Beat the Streak Picks

For the past few years Baseball Musings tried to help with playing Beat the Streak. MLB is not offering the game during the short 2020 season, but people indicated they can still use the data. The Day by Day Database keeps track of hit streak of at least five games. In addition, two programs produce top ten lists of players with a high probability of a hit. If you find this useful, please support Baseball Musings with a donation.

Here are the top picks my programs produced for use in Beat the Streak. This post mostly explains the ideas behind the calculations. In addition, this post shows tests on the Neural Network (NN). This post discusses an NN that includes the ballpark. I updated the models, and the results of those tests are here.

Here are the Log5 Method picks:

Anderson proves his 2019 batting title was not a fluke as he carries his high average into 2020, currently second to DJ LeMahieu among the AL leaders.

Here are the NN picks:

  • 0.338, 0.755 — Tim Anderson batting against Michael Fulmer.
  • 0.317, 0.737 — Hanser Alberto batting against Jordan Montgomery.
  • 0.313, 0.729 — Jose Iglesias batting against Jordan Montgomery.
  • 0.285, 0.727 — Charlie Blackmon batting against Jaime Barria.
  • 0.279, 0.725 — DJ LeMahieu batting against Dean Kremer.
  • 0.277, 0.717 — Trea Turner batting against Ian Anderson.
  • 0.297, 0.716 — Victor Reyes batting against Reynaldo Lopez.
  • 0.314, 0.716 — Jose Abreu batting against Michael Fulmer.
  • 0.270, 0.705 — Jeff McNeil batting against Robbie Ray.
  • 0.295, 0.705 — Andrelton Simmons batting against Kyle Freeland.

The two systems reach agreement today on Anderson and Alberto as the top two picks. The Orioles at the Yankees is an early start, do pick now if you want Alberto.

You can follow the NN results on this spreadsheet. I do not guarantee results. Your best pick is going to have about a 25% chance of not getting a hit. Good luck!
