Matt Chapman of the Oakland Athletics will miss the rest of the 2020 season due to hip surgery. Chapman is a wizard with the glove, but also hits well. In looking at the best hitting third basemen, however, there are quite a few in front of him. We’ve been living in the era of great third basemen for about 12 years now. It’s to the point where Chapman’s .258/.340/.507 (since the start of the 2018 season) while playing the position doesn’t put him in the top five offensively.

Note, also, that Chapman was not hitting well, expect for power this year. If the A’s can replace him with a decent glove and a decent OBP, they probably will be okay.
